What is JSON?

Nested structures at a glance

The real value of formatting shows up once objects and arrays start nesting inside one another several levels deep, which is common in real API responses. A deeply nested, minified blob of JSON is nearly impossible to trace by eye — matching an opening brace to its correct closing brace several lines away is exactly the kind of tedious, error-prone task a computer does far better than a human. A brief history of JSON's rise

JSON was popularised in the early 2000s by Douglas Crockford, who documented and named a data format he noticed was already implicit in JavaScript's own object literal syntax, rather than inventing something entirely new. Its timing coincided with the growth of AJAX-driven web applications that needed a lightweight way to exchange data between browser and server without a full page reload, and its close resemblance to native JavaScript objects meant browsers could parse it almost for free. Common JSON errors and how to spot them

A trailing comma after the last item in an object or array is one of the most frequent errors, since it is valid in JavaScript object literals but explicitly disallowed in JSON. Property names must always be double-quoted strings — unquoted keys and single-quoted strings are both invalid, even though both are legal in JavaScript. Comments are not supported at all in standard JSON, so a configuration file with helpful inline comments (like the JSONC format VS Code uses for its settings) technically is not valid JSON and requires a special-purpose parser. Because JSON's grammar is intentionally stricter than JavaScript's, copying a JavaScript object literal directly into a JSON field is a very common source of the syntax errors this tool helps you catch.
